Uproar over calling Ram Vilas ‘poor’, uproar in Bihar over 85 percent reservation

There was a lot of uproar in the House on Monday, the 10th day of the budget session of Bihar Legislature. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLA Bhai Virend called Lok Janshakti Party founder Ram Vilas Paswan ‘poor’. The MLAs of Bihar’s ruling alliance opposed his statement and raised slogans against RJD. Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) MLA Raju Tiwari has called this comment an insult to Dalits. After which there was a huge uproar in the House and the proceedings had to be adjourned till 2 pm.

The uproar started when Lok Janshakti Party MLA Raju Tiwari stood up in the House and said that Ram Vilas Paswan has worked with six Prime Ministers and has lived a political career of 50 years. He alleged that Rashtriya Janata Dal was hurting his honour. Raju Tiwari made sharp remarks pointing towards the Rashtriya Janata Dal MLAs, on which many opposition members, including brother Virendra, stood up from their seats and started protesting. After that sloganeering started.

Ram Vilas Paswan was called the country’s second Ambedkar.

As soon as the proceedings began, Lok Janshakti Party MLAs raised slogans of ‘Ram Vilas Paswan Zindabad’ in the House. Through posters, he was described as ‘the country’s second Ambedkar’ and Rashtriya Janata Dal was accused of insulting Dalits. The ruling party MLAs said that the use of the word ‘bechara’ is against the dignity of a Dalit leader.

Controversy increased over the word ‘bechara’

Rashtriya Janata Dal MLA Bhai Virendra said that the word ‘bechara’ has no derogatory meaning and the government is giving importance to it to divert attention from the issues. He said that today there will be a vigorous debate on this topic in the House and the opposition is in a ‘aar-paar’ mood. Other leaders of Rashtriya Janata Dal also said that the use of the word ‘bechara’ for a person should not be considered as an insult to the Dalit community.

Brother Virendra, MLA, Maner:-
RJD MLA Kumar Sarvjeet is the leader of our party. He has clearly said that poor has been said because if he was poor then the way this government is anti-reservation, injustice is being done to the poor. That doesn’t happen. He still stands by that point. The word poor is not unparliamentary.

The root of the controversy is related to the comment made recently in which Rashtriya Janata Dal MLA Sarvjit had called Ram Vilas Paswan ‘poor’ in the House. In protest against this, Lok Janshakti Party workers burnt the effigy of opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday. On Monday also, MLAs protested in the House through posters and sloganeering.

Opposition’s demonstration on demand of 85 percent reservation

Rashtriya Janata Dal MLAs demonstrated in the Assembly with posters and banners in their hands. The opposition has termed the Nitish Kumar government as ‘anti-reservation’ and has demanded implementation of 85 percent reservation. The campus echoed with slogans like ’85 percent reservation will have to be given’ and ‘Government should answer’. The opposition alleged that the government was diverting attention from the issue of social justice.
