About tournament format
The 2026 T20 World Cup has 20 teams divided into four groups – A, B, C, and D – with five teams in each group. The top two teams from each group reach the Super 8 stage.
The eight qualifiers are then divided into two groups of four each – Group 1 and Group 2 – where they play round-robin matches in their respective groups. The top two teams from each Super 8 group reach the semi-finals.
Pre-Seeding and Super 8 Structure
Ahead of the tournament, the top eight ranked T20I teams were pre-seeded for the Super 8 stage in the hope of qualification.
Under ICC’s pre-seeding system:
India was designated X1.
England Y1.
Australia X2.
New Zealand Y2.
West Indies X3.
Pakistan Y3.
South Africa X4.
Sri Lanka Y4.
If all the seeded teams qualify, Group 1 will have India, Australia, West Indies and South Africa, while Group 2 will have England, New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
If a pre-seeded team does not advance, the team that qualified from that group will take its designated slot.
Can India and Pakistan meet in Super 8?
If the question is asked, can India and Pakistan meet in Super 8? So the answer would be no. Under the pre-seeding arrangement, India and Pakistan have been placed in separate Super 8 groups. Because at this stage teams face only their own group opponents, hence a rematch in Super 8 is not possible.
What about the semi-finals?
There is a possibility of meeting in the semi-finals. In the knockout structure, the topper team of Group 1 is paired with the runner-up team of Group 2, while the topper team of Group 2 faces the runner-up team of Group 1.
The India-Pakistan semi-final will take place when one team comes first in its group and the other team comes second in the other group. However, if both teams top their groups – or both finish second – they will be placed on different sides of the bracket and will not meet before the finals.
Final match?
An India-Pakistan final is also possible, provided both the teams qualify for the semi-finals and win their respective matches. The two countries have met only once in the T20 World Cup final – in 2007, when the tournament was known as the ICC World T20.
