79% of councilors who win in BMC are crorepatis, Congress is on top and BJP is lagging behind.
According to the ‘Association for Democratic Reforms’ (ADR), an organization working for electoral reforms, about a quarter of the candidates winning the 2026 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections have given information about having criminal cases against them in their election affidavits, while about 79 percent of the candidates are crorepatis.
ADR studied the election affidavits of all 227 winning candidates and found that 54 winning candidates (ie 24 per cent) reported having criminal cases against them, while 29 candidates (ie 13 per cent) had serious criminal charges. The data was compiled from election affidavits filed by candidates during the BMC elections, in collaboration with ‘Maharashtra Election Watch’.

criminal cases against some
According to the report, party-wise analysis revealed that 33 per cent of BJP’s elected candidates reported having criminal cases against them, followed by Shiv Sena’s 24 per cent and Shiv Sena’s (UBT) 15 per cent of their elected candidates who reported having criminal cases against them. At the same time, the data also shows that most of the candidates are millionaires.
79 percent millionaires
According to the ADR, about 180 of the 227 winning candidates, or about 79 per cent, reported assets worth more than Rs 1 crore, while the average wealth of the winning candidates is Rs 7.18 crore. 76 percent of BJP, 83 percent of Shiv Sena (UBT), 93 percent of Shiv Sena and 92 percent of Congress candidates who won the elections are crorepatis.

According to reports, 60 per cent of the elected councilors are women, while almost 70 per cent are in the 41 to 70 age group. Almost half of the winners have educational qualifications at graduate level or above.
