Assam Cabinet approves 3% reservation in government jobs for tea garden tribes

In a historic decision, the Assam government has approved providing 3 percent reservation in Class I and II government jobs for tea garden tribes and tribal communities. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared this information after the cabinet meeting in Dispur on Tuesday.

This step is a positive step for the upliftment of the most deprived sections of the state. Now these communities will get opportunities in higher posts besides class III-IV. Sarma said this will ensure strong presence of these youth in policy making and administration.

Their contribution to the tea industry is the backbone of Assam’s economy, yet their representation in senior positions remained low. This reservation will open doors for educated youth, promote higher education and reduce socio-economic disparities.

Other decisions include preliminary vote-on-account Budget 2026-27, seed capital to 1,07,532 additional women under MMUA scheme, second Sainik Vidyalaya in Karbi Anglong, over 31 bighas of land in Dhemaji to cricket association, Rs 20 crore tourism development for Borbheti in Jorhat.

Earned leave of school teachers extended by 15 days and promotion in agricultural service rules simplified. Sarma described him as a symbol of social justice, employment, infrastructure and inclusive development.
