The statement issued on February 17 said that reports of the rapid deterioration in Imran Khan’s vision while in jail and the circumstances of his detention for the last two and a half years are a matter of grave concern. What did the statement say?
“We, as former captains of our respective national teams, express our deep concern over the alleged treatment and prison conditions of former Pakistan captain and world cricket great Imran Khan,” the statement said. The former captains also underlined the contribution of Imran Khan to the world of sports. He reminded how Imran had led Pakistan to a historic victory in the 1992 Cricket World Cup. The achievement was described as an example of leadership, courage and sportsmanship that has inspired generations across borders. The statement further said, “Many of us played against him, shared the field with him or grew up inspired by his all-round talent, charisma and competitive spirit. He is counted among the greatest all-rounders and captains in the history of cricket.”
3 demands from Pakistan government
In their statement, the former captains have clearly appealed to the Pakistan government to take some concrete steps. He has demanded that immediate, adequate and continuous medical treatment be provided to Imran Khan. The statement said they should have the right to treatment by qualified specialist doctors and, if possible, be allowed to consult specialists of their choice, so that their health problems can be appropriately treated. Humane and dignified detention conditions must be ensured. Prison conditions should meet international standards, including permission for regular visits by family members. Be given fair and transparent access to the legal process. The former captains stressed that they should be given a fair chance in the judicial process without any unnecessary delay or obstruction.
The statement also said that cricket has always served as a bridge between countries and despite competition on the field, mutual respect remains. The former captains appealed that Imran Khan be treated fairly, keeping in mind the same principles of sportsmanship and humanity. He clarified that this appeal has been made on the basis of sportsmanship and human values, and has no prejudicial connection with any legal proceedings.
