Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev’s appeal on Imran Khan’s health

International cricket stalwarts including Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev have issued a joint statement expressing deep concern over the health of former Pakistan Prime Minister and 1992 World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan. The statement issued on February 17 demanded the Pakistan government to provide immediate, adequate medical facilities and humane treatment to Khan in custody. “We express our deep concern over the alleged treatment and circumstances of detention of former Pakistan captain and world cricket legend Imran Khan,” the statement said.

Apart from former Indian captains Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, those who have signed this appeal include Michael Atherton, Allan Border, Michael Brierley, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, David Gower, Kim Hughes, Nasir Hussain, Clive Lloyd, Stephen Waugh and John Wright.

Former captains recalled Khan’s leadership at the 1992 Cricket World Cup, saying that victory was “based on tenacity, sportsmanship and inspiration, which made an impact beyond borders. Beyond political differences, Khan should have received humane treatment and fair legal access.”

This appeal comes a few days after Imran Khan’s medical examination, in which he complained of poor vision in his right eye on February 15. The Supreme Court of Pakistan had ordered a detailed medical examination before 16 February. Authorities had indicated that he could be taken to hospital, but doctors reached Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail and examined him.

Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has raised questions over the investigation process. According to a party lawyer, Khan has claimed that he has lost about 85 percent of the vision in his right eye.

Let us tell you that Imran Khan was the Prime Minister of Pakistan from 2018 to 2022. He has been in jail since August 2023 and has several cases registered against him, many of which are said to be politically motivated. His former teammate Wasim Akram had also earlier urged the authorities to provide him the best medical care.
