Former Mainz and Union Berlin coach Bo Svensson was widely considered the favourite to replace Horst Steffen at Werder Bremen, but Daniel Thioune ultimately took the job after the Dane turned down an offer from the Green-Whites.

In a recent interview with Transfermarkt, Svensson’s agent, Marc Kosicke, explained the Danish coach’s decision.

“Bo has a family and, after years of ‘wandering,’ he’s enjoying his time with them in Denmark. It simply wasn’t the right moment for him to jump in. He wants to start working again from the summer. Bo has already had several offers. But in the end, I’m just an agent, not a decision-maker. I give my opinion, present options – and the coach makes the decision,” Kosicke said.

Kosicke is aware, however, that there is no guarantee a suitable opportunity will be waiting at the end of the season.

“Knowing in February that you’ll have a new job in July is very rare. Maybe Bo will think in the summer: ‘Damn, I should have taken the Werder job.’ But that doesn’t happen often,” Kosicke said.

“Coaches usually decide right away: ‘I’ll do it!’ That can sometimes be a problem, because someone wants to get back to work so badly, even if the job doesn’t feel right. Still, the coach takes it – which I can understand. There are more coaches than available top positions, so it’s best if they are working.

“I always compare it, with a wink, to this: if you’re taken and go to the club, you’re interesting to others. If you’re single and looking, you often go home alone. It’s the same with coaches: those who already have a job are the interesting ones.”

Svensson last served as Union Berlin coach between July and December 2024.
