Sonia Asked Me to Pick a Date The Day Rahul Gandhi Allegedly Blocked Himanta’s CM Dream:

In the world of politics, a single decision can ripple through decades. On Tuesday, February 17, 2026Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma dropped a political bombshell that took everyone back to the summer of 2014. Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting in the State Assembly, Sarma shared a deeply personal chapter from his past one that explains his dramatic exit from the Congress party and his eventual rise within the BJP.

According to Sarma, there was a moment when he was just days away from becoming the Chief Minister of Assam under the Congress banner, only for the opportunity to vanish in an instant.

“Madam Told Me to Fix the Date”

Sarma claimed that in 2014, when he had the support of 58 Congress MLAs (a majority against then-CM Tarun Gogoi), the party high command seemed ready to make the switch. He revealed that Sonia Gandhi personally called him and asked him to fix a date for his swearing-in ceremony.

“I told her I would take the oath in June, after the Ambubachi Mela at the Kamakhya Temple,” Sarma recalled. For a moment, his lifelong dream was within reach.

The Rahul Gandhi Factor

However, the celebration was short-lived. Sarma alleged that Rahul Gandhiwho was traveling in the United States at the time, made a series of phone calls to party leaders back in India. Following those calls, the high command’s stance flipped entirely. The plan to replace Tarun Gogoi was scrapped, and Sarma was left in the lurch.

Sarma famously left the Congress in 2015, joined the BJP, and led them to a historic victory in 2016. He noted that while he felt “hurt” at the time, he now views the intervention as a blessing in disguise.

“God Gave Me More”

Reflecting on his journey, the Chief Minister said that being in the BJP has allowed him to serve both Assam and Sanatan Dharma with a freedom he would never have had in the Congress.

“I believe whatever happens in life happens for the best. What God gave me later was far greater than what I would have received back then,” he said. He even hinted that if he ever writes an autobiography, these high-stakes behind-the-scenes dramas will occupy a significant portion of the book.

Why It Matters Today

This revelation isn’t just about old grudges. It highlights the long-standing friction between Sarma and the Gandhi family, particularly Rahul Gandhi. As Assam prepares for future elections, these stories reinforce Sarma’s narrative as a leader who was “pushed out” by a dynastic hierarchy, only to find success on his own terms.
