Nargis Sunil Dutt Love Story: Whenever there is talk about the best films of the film world, there is definitely mention of the film Mother India, directed by Mehboob Khan in 1957. The beautiful actress Nargis was in this film, who broke all the records at the box office at that time. Considered to be one of the few feminist films made in that era, this social-drama took us through the heart-wrenching story of a mother and her struggles in a patriarchal society.

The film was praised for the strong acting of Nargis and Suni Dutt and its heart-touching songs. Mother India was also the evidence of one of the biggest love stories of Bollywood, which is still recorded in the pages of history.

Needless to say, Nargis and Sunil Dutt’s love started from the sets of Mother India. It started when Sunil Dutt saved Nargis from a dangerous fire. Here’s what happened.

When fire broke out during shooting

When the film was being shot in Surat city of Gujarat, an accident occurred during the shooting of a fire scene. There were heaps of grass kept in a field, which had to be set on fire, and Nargis had to run away from it. Everything did not go as per plan. When Nargis started running among the burning haystacks, the wind suddenly changed its direction, due to which she got trapped inside the burning flames.

Jumped into the fire to save Nargis

Sunil Dutt, who was soon to be seen in the same scene with Nargis, saw this incident and ran to help her, risking his life. He jumped into the raging fire, picked up Nargis in his arms and pulled her out to safety. This incident is recorded in writer TS George’s book ‘The Life and Times of Nargis’. While trying to save Nargis from the fire, Sunil Dutt got badly injured. He was badly burnt and Nargis also suffered minor injuries.

In a collection of Nargis’s diaries, which were brought together in author Kishwar Desai’s book, ‘Darlingji – The True Love Story of Nargis and Sunil Dutt’, Nargis had written that Sunil was given injections to reduce the pain. He kept asking the doctors whether Nargis’s health was fine or not.

‘The most beautiful days of my life’

Nargis soon started taking care of Sunil, due to which she gradually fell in love with him. There came a time when Nargis did not want to stay away from him even for a minute. He wrote in his diary, “These were the most beautiful days of my life.”

Nargis and Sunil Dutt’s marriage

In 1958, Nargis married Sunil Dutt, ending her 9-year relationship with Raj Kapoor, who was already married at the time. However, their love story did not last long, because Nargis died of pancreatic cancer in 1981. She was 52 years old. In 2005, Sunil Dutt also passed away from a heart attack at the age of 75. Nargis and Sunil Dutt have three children – Sanjay Dutt, Priya Dutt and Namrata Dutt.
