Mentorship, legacy, and surviving in the system are heavily featured themes in the series – Hondo needs to create a functional team and save the program that has been his life’s work. The tone of the spin-off has been characterized as larger, edgier, and more intense while still reflecting elements of the franchise core – high-stakes action, teamwork, and being human through moral dilemmas.
The showrunner Jason Ning (Lucifer) refers to the series as a re-imagining instead of a soft reboot, and uses Hondo as the glue between the two series, while taking bold, contemporary approaches to storytelling. While being developed, the first season contains 10 episodes, structured to tell a complete story arc for the new squad, if given the greenlight.
