The chair of Bangladesh is with Tariq, then why did Mohammad Yunus become the ‘real juggler’? Know the complete inside game
Bangladesh July Charter Controversy: A big upheaval is being seen in the politics of Bangladesh. Khaleda Zia’s son and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tariq Rahman has officially taken oath as Prime Minister. With this, the rule of a male Prime Minister has started in the country after about 36 years.
However, the discussion in political circles is whether the real winner of this whole chessboard is Tariq Rehman or Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus who took charge of the interim administration for the last 18 months.
Yunus’s 18-month ‘successful’ Turn
When Sheikh Hasina had to leave the country following the anti-quota agitation by students in July-August 2024, Mohammad Yunus became the head of the interim administration. He took many important decisions during his tenure of 18 months.
Yunus’s biggest success is considered to be that he conducted elections by keeping Sheikh Hasina’s party, Awami League, out and it was considered ‘inclusive’ at the international level, especially from the western countries. Also got the election recognized. Senior journalists believe that holding elections by excluding the party with 40% vote share and making it acceptable is a big diplomatic victory for Yunus.
Big achievement on the economic front
An important trade deal was signed with America during Yunus’s tenure. Under this agreement, US tariffs on Bangladeshi products made from American raw materials were reduced to zero, which is being considered a big relief for the Bangladeshi economy. Apart from this, he also made laws through ordinances on modern topics like data privacy and cloud computing.
shadow of controversies and violence
Amidst claims of success, Yunus’s tenure was also surrounded by controversies. During his rule, serious questions arose regarding law and order. Attacks on minorities, mob violence and political assassinations continued unabated. Besides, he was also accused of compromising women’s rights under the pressure of Islamic organizations.
‘July Charter’ A great battle broke out on
Now that Tariq Rehman has come to power, Yunus’s dream project ‘July Charter‘ Seemingly under threat, the Charter received 62% support in a referendum aimed at giving Parliament the power to act as a Constituent Assembly for 180 days. But, BNP, which has secured two-thirds majority, is opposing many sections of this charter. Jamaat-e-Islami and National Citizens Party (NCP) have threatened to take to the streets if the charter is not implemented.

future of yunus
After leaving the post of Prime Minister, now the question is arising as to what 85 year old Yunus will do. Although some people were speculating about his becoming the President, it seems less likely in a BNP government. At present, despite being away from power in Dhaka, Mohammad Yunus’ deep impression is visible on the new system of Bangladesh.
