4 Vietnam street food sweets make TasteAtlas’s Asia’s best

Four Vietnamese street sweets, including fried banana and mung bean-filled doughnuts, have been named among Asia’s top street food sweets by international food magazine TasteAtlas.

The ranking is based on over 6,630 ratings, of which about 3,400 were verified as legitimate.

Chuoi war (fried banana) places 24th on the list. The dish uses a small and fragrant banana variety named wait. The fruit is sliced and fried in a coconut-infused batter, resulting in a crisp exterior. It is often finished with sesame seeds or a drizzle of coconut sauce.

Close behind comes orange cakea fried doughnut, at number 26. The pastry is made from rice flour mixed with sugar and filled with mung bean paste. It is then fried until golden and coated with sesame.

Both fried banana and orange cake doughnut also featured last year on the global list of the world’s 100 best sweets.

Further down the Asian list, banh hat (chestnut cake) takes 55th spot.

Originating from the Sa Pa region in northern Vietnam, the snack features a pastry shell filled with ground chestnuts and fried until crispy.

At number 57 is come on (sugared or salted fruits), a Hanoi specialty made from fruits such as apricot or or – dracontomelon.

The fruits are cleaned, pricked to absorb seasoning, cooked with sugar, salt and ginger or chili, fermented, and dried. Come on is particularly popular during the Lunar New Year.

Topping the list is pisang goreng from Indonesia, a fried banana or plantain dish. It is followed by Turkey’s dondurma, a stretchy ice cream made with mastic resin and salep flour, and kunefe, a syrup-soaked pastry with melted cheese.
