Generally, petroleum crude oil accounts for about 80 percent of India’s total merchandise imports from Russia. Experts believe that the actual import of crude oil from Russia this month was less than $2.3 billion.

Central government released trade data

Actually, the central government on Monday released trade data for January 2026. In this, sequential data of countries has not been released, so that the picture on trade imports with other countries can be clear. Apart from crude oil, India imports coal, coke, petroleum products, fertilizers, iron, newsprint, project materials, pulses, pearls, precious and semi-precious stones from Russia.

Reduction in Russian crude oil imports in 2025-26

There is a decline in Russian crude oil imports in 2025-26. India had touched the highest peak of $4.73 billion from Russia in April 2025. But, after the trade agreement between India and America this month, Delhi has suddenly reduced its purchase of oil from Moscow. Donald Trump has put huge pressure on India to buy crude oil from Russia.

Imports will fall further

Let us tell you that many big Indian refinery companies have also given statements regarding the import of crude oil from Russia. Also this month, Reliance Industries, India’s largest private refiner, said it did not expect to take delivery of any Russian crude in January. According to the data, merchandise imports from Russia are expected to decline further in the coming months as Indian refiners start buying cheaper Venezuelan crude oil compared to Russian oil.
