Rajya Sabha Election 2026: The stir has again intensified in the country’s politics. The dates for the 2026 Rajya Sabha elections have been announced. This time a total of 37 seats in 10 states are falling vacant, for which voting will be held in March. Every two years some seats of Rajya Sabha become vacant and new members are elected.
Election Commission released the program
The dates for the biennial elections of Rajya Sabha have been announced by the Election Commission of India. After the release of the notification, the process of nomination, scrutiny, withdrawal of nominations and then voting will be completed.
If understood in local language, new faces will go to the upper house of the Parliament in place of the MPs whose tenure is ending.
Which states’ seats are becoming vacant?
This time, the 10 states whose seats are falling vacant include Maharashtra, Odisha, Bihar, Haryana, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh and Assam.
The tenure of a total of 37 Rajya Sabha MPs from these states is ending. Now political parties will decide the candidates according to their respective equations.
Who will be leaving?
The tenure of Rajya Sabha MPs is 6 years. The members whose tenure is ending in March 2026 will resign from the House, unless they are re-sent back by giving them a party ticket.
Many senior leaders may retire, while some may get a second chance. This is an opportunity for the parties to make strategies, especially in the states where the strength of the assembly is more.
How are Rajya Sabha elections held?
Rajya Sabha elections are not directly elected by the public. The elected MLAs of the respective state assembly vote. This election is held through the system of proportional representation and single transferable vote.
The party which has more MLAs in the assembly has more chances of winning more seats.

Why is this election important?
Rajya Sabha is called the upper house of the Parliament. Many important bills are passed from here. If any party does not have majority in the Rajya Sabha, then it may be difficult to pass the law.
