Merger of NCP factions cancelled: Ban on statements of MLAs

Bureau Prayagraj. Political activities have intensified in Maharashtra. NCP (Ajit Pawar) has imposed strict restrictions on MLAs giving statements. Merger talks with the Sharad Pawar-led faction are over for now. Sunetra Pawar can be elected the next president on 26 February.

The speculations about the merger of NCP factions have now come to a complete stop. The party leadership has issued a strict ‘gag order’ (silent order) on its MLAs. It has become clear that at present the merger of the two NCP factions is not possible. It is being said that some MLAs are strongly advocating the merger. In case of no merger, some MLAs may join BJP.

This instruction was issued in the meeting of MLAs at ‘Devagiri’, the official residence of Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar on Monday. At the meeting, the party also formally decided that Sunetra Pawar, wife of late party chief Ajit Pawar, will be elected the next NCP national president. Ajit Pawar died in a plane crash on January 28.

In the core committee meeting, all the MLAs supported this proposal by raising their hands. Party working president Praful Patel later said that the election would be held on February 26 in Mumbai and Sunetra Pawar was likely to be elected unopposed.

Regarding the silence order imposed on the MLAs, party insiders said that the leadership wants to know why some MLAs are demanding merger with NCP (SP). Is this driven by outside influences or the MLAs’ own belief that the merger will strengthen the situation in their areas? Recently there were indications that if the merger does not happen, some MLAs may join BJP.
