Head bowed in embarrassment! Show of Chinese Robodog cost Galgotias University a lot, out of AI SUMMIT after slander
Galgotia University out from AI Summit: New Delhi Galgotias University has suffered a major setback during the India AI Impact Summit held in 2017. This institute based in Greater Noida was ordered to vacate the expo area of the summit. After which the university has removed its stall from the summit.
This action was taken after a video went viral on social media, in which university representatives were seen presenting a Chinese robotic dog as their invention. After this, the university started getting a lot of attention on social media.
There was controversy regarding which robot?
The robot over which there was controversy is a model named ‘Unitree Go2’. It is manufactured by Chinese robotics company Unitri and is available online in India at a price of around Rs 2 to 3 lakh.
How did this controversy arise?
This robot named ‘Orion’ was displayed in the summit. In the video that went viral on social media, a woman, who was described as a representative of the university in media reports, is seen explaining the features of the robot while talking to the media. In the video she says that Orion has been developed by the Center of Excellence of Galgotias University.
In another interview clip, a university professor was also seen making the same claim. He told the reporter that this robot has been prepared in the Center of Excellence. After the video surfaced, social media users immediately recognized it. After this, the university started being accused of presenting foreign technology as Indian innovation.
What did the university say?
As the controversy escalated, Galgotias University issued a statement on social media platform X (earlier Twitter). It was said that this robot has been purchased from Unity and it is being used for the learning purpose of students. The university also said that it never claimed that it had created this robot itself, even though its employees were seen on camera saying so.
The statement said, “The robodog recently purchased from Unity is a step in this direction. It is not just a demonstration machine, but a mobile classroom. Our students are experimenting with it, testing its limits and expanding their knowledge. We want to clarify that Galgotias has not created this robodog nor have we claimed so. But we are preparing the minds who will design and build such technology in India in the future.”
What did the professor of Galgotias University say on being fired?
On the news of India AI Impact Summit being asked to vacate the expo area, Galgotias University Professor Dr. Aishwarya Srivastava had said that at present we are not aware of any such information. However, now the university has removed its stall.
Neha, Communications Professor of Galgotias University has also given clarification in this matter. She said, “Due to a misunderstanding, a storm has arisen on the Internet. Maybe I did not explain my point properly, or you guys did not understand me properly. I am the faculty of communication in the School of Management, not in the AI department. You (media) have only heard what the government has said. As far as I know, we are still present in the Expo. As a university, we stand firmly. The robots are here only for demonstration. Was brought for.”
