Iceland Cricket Trolls Australia After T20 WC 2026 Exit
Australia’s hopes of staying in the T20 World Cup were dashed when the match between Ireland and Zimbabwe was called off due to rain. This meant that Australia, the 2021 champions, had to head home early. The team’s losses to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka earlier in the tournament ultimately led to their elimination. Iceland Cricket took a jab at Australia, particularly questioning their decision to leave out in-form player Steve Smith from the team that played against Sri Lanka. It was a surprising move that raised a few eyebrows. Australia’s exit from the tournament was a disappointing end to their campaign, and they will have to regroup and come back stronger next time. The rain in Pallekele may have been beyond their control, but the defeats that preceded it were a major factor in their early departure from the tournament.
Australia started their journey in the tournament with a win against Ireland on February 11, which was a great beginning. However, they soon faced a setback when they lost to Zimbabwe on February 13, a defeat that was somewhat expected. To stay in the running, Australia had to beat Sri Lanka, but unfortunately, they were beaten convincingly on February 16, which was a big blow to their chances.
It was really surprising to a lot of people that the team managers brought Steve Smith all the way from Australia before the game against Sri Lanka, but then they didn’t even put him in the team. When Iceland Cricket saw that Smith wasn’t being given a chance to show what he could do and help Australia when they really needed it, they decided to have a bit of fun and tease them about it.
Iceland Cricket jokingly said that Steve Smith’s best part of the T20 World Cup was probably the duty-free shopping at the airport. They think they could treat him way better, like building a statue in his honor and giving him all the free cod he wants. It’s funny because sometimes the people who are really important to us get overlooked.
Australia’s captain, Mitchell Marsh, was clearly upset after his team lost to Sri Lanka in the T20 World Cup 2026. He said that the whole team is really disappointed about what happened. Marsh talked about how the team is feeling, and it’s clear that they’re all very sad about the loss. The defeat was a big blow to the team, and they’re still trying to come to terms with it. Marsh and his team had been hoping to do well in the tournament, but now they’re facing a tough time after this loss.
The team is really down after losing to Sri Lanka, said Captain Mitch Marsh, clearly upset about the defeat.
“We’re in the lap of the Gods now, I think, with the way it’s shaped up. There are a lot of emotions in the rooms right now. We haven’t been at our best.”
Controversy Over Steve Smith’s Non-Selection
Steve Smith was a late addition to Australia’s team, filling in for Josh Hazlewood who got hurt. But even though he got to the game against Sri Lanka early, he didn’t get to play. So, he didn’t get a chance to score any points in the tournament.
He went into the tournament after doing really well in the Big Bash League 2025-26, where he scored 299 runs in just six matches for the Sydney Sixers, hitting the ball at a rate of almost 170. It was pretty shocking that he didn’t make it into Australia’s team, especially considering how well he was playing at home.
