Gerard Butler ‘Pulled Out’ of Beloved Action Movie Sequel 2 Weeks Before Filming
Gerard Butler pulled out of a sequel to his beloved 2023 action movie two weeks before the start date.
Why did Gerard Butler pull out of Plane 2?
In January 2023, Butler starred in Plane, an action thriller about a pilot forced to defend his passengers from hostile enemies after landing in dangerous territory. The movie garnered positive reviews and grossed $74 million worldwide on a $25 million budget. One month after the movie’s release, Plane 2 was greenlit.
Shipthe official title of the Plane sequel, would star Mike Colter, who reprises his role from Plane as Louis Gaspare, an accused murderer who formed an unlikely alliance with Butler’s Captain Brodie Torrance. At the end of Plane, Gaspare helped Torrance pilot off the island, but he stayed behind to avoid extradition. Gaspare ran into the jungle with a bag of money.
Butler was not expected to star in Ship. However, Butler was expected to make a cameo and serve as a producer.
During a recent interview with The DirectColter revealed that Butler pulled the plug right before production began on Ship.
“It just, last-minute, Gerard [Butler] decided he didn’t want to go forward with it, and there wasn’t a lot of discussion about it,” Colter said. “[Butler] just . . . two weeks out, he pulled out and we were sort of left trying to figure out what to do. And eventually, that dissolved.”
Colter explained how Ship was going to jump right into the events after Plane.
“The script. Basically picking up where we left off, what happened to that character, and how’d he get off the island,” Colter added. “That was where we were gonna go with it. So, I was excited about it.”
According to Ship’s official synopsis, Gaspare was aboard a cargo ship bound for South Africa when he discovered the vessel was being used for a “human trafficking ring.” Gaspare then teams with the ship’s second mate to take down the captain and free the captives.
