Axar Patel recalls coffee joke amid T20 World Cup heroics

India’s star all-rounder Axar Patel has shared a humorous story from his early cricketing days, even as he continues to shine in the T20 World Cup 2026.

Patel revealed that during his India A stint, he was puzzled by teammates like Karun Nair and Manish Pandey regularly drinking black coffee. A self-confessed tea lover who preferred sugar in his cup, Axar once tried black coffee but found it too bitter.

“I said, bhai, yeh kya pee rahe ho? It has no taste, it is bitter. I wouldn’t drink it even for free,” he recalled with a laugh.

From tea lover to coffee advocate

Patel explained that his perspective changed in 2019 during his time with the Delhi Capitals. Teammate Harshal Patel showed him how to prepare coffee properly, explaining the proportions and process.

Though the taste remained similar, Axar admitted that making it himself changed how he appreciated it. He now jokes that he could “sell coffee” and even quipped about opening “Bapu’s Cafe,” inspired by his nickname.

Delivering with the ball

While his anecdote entertained fans, Patel’s performances on the field have been equally impressive. He is currently joint-highest wicket-taker alongside Varun Chakaravarthy in the tournament.

In three matches, Axar has claimed six wickets at an average of 12.16 and an economy rate of 6.63. His figures include 2/24 against the USA, 2/20 versus Namibia, and 2/29 against Pakistan.

His ability to strike in the middle overs has played a key role in India’s unbeaten run and qualification for the Super 8 stage.

From questioning black coffee to leading with the ball, Axar Patel continues to leave his mark — both on and off the field.
