When will fugitive Vijay Mallya come to India? The businessman replied to the Bombay High Court, ending the suspense in one fell swoop!
Vijay Mallya News: Fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya has given up on returning to India. Mallya clarified in the Bombay High Court on Wednesday that he cannot give any definite date for his return to his country. He has cited the strict laws of the United Kingdom and the cancellation of his passport as the main reasons behind this.
The case was being heard by a bench of Chief Justice Chandrashekhar and Justice Gautam Ankhar. In the last hearing, the court had asked Mallya whether he had any intention of returning to India. The court had also made it clear that unless he returns, hearing his petitions will be difficult, but now Mallya has expressed his inability.
What did Vijay Mallya tell the court?
Mallya’s lawyer Amit Desai read out his statement in the court. It was said that it is not in his power to tell when he will return to India. Desai argued that Mallya does not hold an active Indian passport as it was canceled by the Indian government in 2016. Additionally, orders from the courts of England and Wales bar him from traveling outside the UK.
Mallya has been living in Britain since 2016.
The lawyer said that Mallya is not allowed to apply for or possess any international travel document. In such a situation, the petitioner is not in a position to tell when he will set foot on Indian soil. Vijay Mallya has been living in Britain since leaving India in March 2016.

He has filed two petitions in the Bombay High Court. In the first petition, the order declaring him a fugitive economic offender has been challenged, while in the second petition, questions have been raised on the constitutional validity of the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act itself.
What argument did the lawyer give in the court?
Senior lawyer Amit Desai further argued that Mallya’s presence in India is not necessary for hearing the petition challenging the order declaring him a fugitive economic offender. Desai told the court that as per the law, if Mallya appears in India, then all these proceedings will automatically become meaningless and all the orders will be cancelled.
What are the allegations against Vijay Mallya?
70-year-old Mallya is accused of defaulting in loan payments worth several thousand crore rupees and money laundering. A special court hearing cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act had declared him a fugitive economic offender in January 2019. At present, the High Court has directed the Central Government to file a reply to Mallya’s statement and has postponed further hearing of the case to next month.
