In the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, Mother Cow is known as ‘State Mother’ Political battle over granting of UT status, Congress attacks after government’s refusal on BJP MLA’s question

The politics of Rajasthan has once again come to a boil over ‘Mother Cow’. When the government said ‘no’ to the demand of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA in the Assembly, the issue has moved from the House to the center of street politics. Seizing this opportunity, Congress has accused BJP of double character and has announced a big movement.

This whole controversy started during the Question Hour on Tuesday, when BJP MLA from Hawamahal, Jaipur, Balmukund Acharya raised the demand of giving the status of ‘State Mother’ to Mother Cow. He had asked a question about the future plans of the government, but the answer gave rise to a new debate.

Government’s denial and opposition’s attack

Cow Husbandry Department Minister Jora Ram Kumawat’s answer to MLA Acharya’s question was unexpected. He clarified in the House that at present the government has no idea of giving the status of ‘Mother of the State’ to Mother Cow. Kumawat argued that adequate laws already exist in the state for cow protection, so there is no need for a separate status.

There was an uproar in the House after this stance of the government. Congress MLAs cornered the BJP and said that the party only asks for votes in the name of cow, but when the opportunity comes to give it respect and official status, it backs down. During this time, the atmosphere became more heated due to the mention of an incident of cow slaughter in Jaipur.

Congress will protest on the streets

The opposition has made preparations to fully capitalize on this issue. Senior Congress leader and former minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas launched a scathing attack on the government and linked it to political honesty.

“BJP only asks for votes in the name of cow. If they really consider mother cow to be revered then there should be no problem in giving her the status of mother of the state. Congress will launch a big movement on this issue and if necessary, will take to the streets and protest.” — Pratap Singh Khachariyawas, Congress leader

During the debate, BJP MLA Gopal Sharma became so angry that he started moving towards the opposition, although he later publicly apologized for his behaviour. But this incident further increased the tension in the House.

BJP government came to the rescue

The government and BJP defended themselves amid opposition attacks. Minister of State for Home Jawahar Singh Bedam said that Mother Cow is a symbol of faith for all and the government is fully committed to their protection. He accused Congress of politicizing this sensitive issue.

At the same time, MLA Balmukund Acharya, who asked the question, also said that the government has not backed down from his demand and many important works have been done for cow service in the state. However, this issue has now become a big topic of Rajasthan politics, where BJP is in an uncomfortable situation on the demand of its own MLA and Congress is preparing to turn it into a big movement.
