Once there was strength… now it has become weakness, how will Surya overcome this deficiency?
Team India captain Suryakumar Yadav was struggling to score runs in international cricket last year. He did not score even a half-century and his strike rate also saw a huge decline. Surya’s form was a cause of concern for the Indian team. He returned to form in the series against New Zealand just before the T20 World Cup 2026. Surya scored 3 half-centuries in the 5-match T20 series. He was chosen Player of the Series.
He also started the T20 World Cup with a bang. In the first match against America, the Indian captain scored unbeaten 84 runs in 49 balls, which included 10 fours and 4 sixes. It seemed that Surya was going to rule the entire tournament but he has not been able to do anything special in the last 3 matches. He could score only 12 runs against Namibia. He played innings of 32 and 34 runs against Pakistan and Netherlands respectively but he did not look in his best form.

strength becomes weakness
There are not many question marks on Surya’s innings on the difficult pitch of Colombo, but his inning of 34 runs in 27 balls against Netherlands in Ahmedabad on Wednesday has increased the concern of the fans of Team India. Surya also got a lease of life on his personal score of 13 runs but he could not take advantage of it. In the 14th over, he caught Kyle Klein’s full ball straight to fine leg. Surya has been hitting sixes easily in this direction but now he is getting stuck here.

Will Surya give up his greed?
Since last year, he has been caught behind square on the leg side 7 times against fast bowlers in T20 Internationals. He has hit 14 sixes during this period, whereas since his debut in 2021 till 2024, he had hit 57 sixes against the pacers and was out only 9 times. It is clear from this that now the opposition teams are coming with a plan to get them out in this area. Surya is being tempted to play his favorite shots behind square on the leg side, in which he is getting easily trapped.
His role in Team India’s title defense campaign is to keep the score board running in the middle overs. But he is losing his wicket at the last moment, due to which the pressure is suddenly increasing. Surya will have to rectify this shortcoming in the Super-8, otherwise Team India’s campaign may hang in the balance.
