West Bengal Political: India’s Union Home Minister Amit Shah participated in a religious-social event organized in Mayapur in Nadia district of West Bengal, where he underlined the contribution of the Matua community to social reform and integration of Hindu society. During this time, he emphasized on spiritual and cultural discussions while staying away from contemporary political issues.

At the event organized in Mayapur, considered a major center of the Bhakti movement, Shah made it clear that he was here not as the Home Minister, but as a devotee of the spiritual tradition.

Matua Mahasangha and the legacy of social reform

In his address, Amit Shah described Harichand Thakur, his son Guruchand Thakur and Vaishnav saint Bhaktisiddhant Saraswati as harbingers of social change. He said that these saints and reformers combined the spiritual energy of the Bhakti movement with social awareness and carried forward the ideas of equality, education and gender justice in the society.

Shah particularly mentioned the campaigns against untouchability and efforts to spread education within the Matua community. He said that the role of the community towards social harmony and equal opportunities has been remarkable.

‘I have come not as a Home Minister, but as a devotee’

Speaking at an event organized on the occasion of the 152nd birth anniversary of Bhaktisiddhant Saraswati, Amit Shah said, “I have come here not as a Home Minister, but as a follower of the spiritual values ​​that established Indian culture on the world stage. He also said that India is moving towards becoming a developed nation by 2047 and the message of Sanatan Dharma will reach globally and widely.

He also mentioned the ‘Hare Krishna’ message given by the Prime Minister to the people present at the event and said that whenever a foreign delegate comes to India, he is presented a copy of the Bhagavad Gita.

Nadia: historical center of Bhakti movement

Describing Nadia as the main center of Bhakti movement, Amit Shah said that this land has been witness to spiritual renaissance. He expressed confidence that the cultural and spiritual importance of this area will further increase in the coming years. Mayapur is considered an important center of Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition globally and many monasteries and institutions located here attract international devotees.

According to political analysts, this visit is considered important before the upcoming elections in West Bengal. The Matua community has an influential socio-political presence in many districts of southern Bengal. However, leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state clarified that the event should not be seen as a political platform. He says that the aim of the Home Minister was to give the message of social and spiritual unity, and not to raise any controversial issue.

During the visit, Shah did not comment on any contemporary political controversies or administrative issues, indicating that the event was deliberately limited to cultural and religious dimensions.
