SIR will be held in Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim, Tripura, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
What happens during the SIR process?
If BLO is visiting your home, it is mandatory to have Aadhaar card, age certificates and residence certificates for family members. Additionally, if a family member has completed the age of 18 years, their name can be included in the electoral roll. If a family member has migrated, their name can be removed and included in the new voter ID card. Also, if the photo on your voter ID card is old or blurry, you can remove it by providing a clear photo. Under the SIR process, booth-level officials go door-to-door to verify the identity of those listed in the electoral roll, determining whether the person is still living there. The names of the deceased are removed from the electoral roll. In addition, this campaign corrects errors in name, age, poor quality photos and addresses.
What is SIR?
SIR That means thorough, thorough scrutiny and revision of the voter list. Election Commission officials go door-to-door to collect information about eligible voters, decide who is excluded and whose names should be excluded. After this process, a new electoral roll is prepared.

When was the first SIR conducted in the country?
The first official SIR in India was conducted between 2002 and 2004. This was a huge undertaking at the time, as the electoral rolls were riddled with errors. In many states, millions of names were duplicated or incorrectly listed due to outdated data. In 2003, a major reform drive was also implemented in Bihar. Hence the Election Commission has now started a new SIR in 2025.
Why is SIR necessary?
Over time, various errors occur in electoral rolls. Some people are registered twice in the same place, some people’s names remain in their old places even after moving, some people’s names are misspelled and many people remain on the list even after death. The Election Commission conducts SIRs to correct such discrepancies, so that the electoral roll is completely accurate and fair the next time elections are held.
