Meghalaya: Shillong Lok Sabha MP Ricky Singkon dies while playing football

Shillong19 February. Meghalaya Lok Sabha MP and Voice of the People Party (VPP) leader Ricky Andrew J. Singkon died in Shillong on Thursday night. Party officials said he died shortly after falling while playing football.

Singkon, MP from Shillong parliamentary seat, was taking part in a friendly football game when he suddenly collapsed on the court. A senior VPP leader told the media that he was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead at around 8.45 pm. Singkon was known for his active public activities and reaching out to the people at the grassroots level in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills.

VPP colleagues and people close to them said that the MP was taking part in a friendly futsal session when the incident occurred. Futsal is a faster, shorter version of football, played between two teams of five players each on a small indoor court.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Sangma expressed grief

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed grief over the sudden death of the MP. He was also described as a dedicated public representative, who worked tirelessly for the welfare of the people. Leaders from different parties also expressed grief over Singkon’s death and recalled his consistent efforts to raise regional issues in Parliament.
