Jonathan Trott Steps Away from Afghanistan Cricket; Rashid Khan Pays Tribute
Former England cricketer Jonathan Trott will be stepping down as Afghanistan’s head coach after the T20 World Cup 2026.
Trott will be guiding the side for one last time during Afghanistan’s outing against Canada in the 39th match of the T20 World Cup campaign.
Since he was appointed Afghanistan head coach in July 2022, Jonathan Trott has played a crucial role in rising Afghanistan cricket team as a competitive side in white-ball cricket.
Initially appointed for 18 months, his contract was extended by a year in 2024 and has been renewed once again in 2025.
Speaking at the pre-match conference, Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan said, “We have a series against Sri Lanka straight after the World Cup and then the IPL. Tomorrow is Jonathan Trott’s last game with us. We’ve had some unbelievable games and tours with him. He has been someone who has taken Afghanistan cricket to where it is now.”
Rashid Khan also highlighted Trott’s dedication on improving players individually and his role in guiding the team.
“I think he has worked so hard with every single one. Definitely, everyone around us will miss him so much. He played a main role in taking this team on the right path,” he added.
He also reminded their upcoming ODI World Cup in South Africa saying, Afghanistan are aiming to build on their strong performance from 2023 edition.
“We had a great 2023 World Cup, but we look forward to improving the things we didn’t do well and keep improving each and every day,” he added.
Afghanistan had a heartbreaking campaign in the ongoing T20 World Cup. Despite putting up a fight, Afghanistan lost the games against South Africa and New Zealand.
Despite their victory against UAE, they has been knocked out of the tournament and will be playing their final group stage game against Canada on February 19 at MA Chidambaram StadiumChennai.
