Supreme Court angry over freebies: ‘State is in loss… give employment instead of free schemes’, freebies Supreme Court showed strictness

New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Thursday made strict comments on the free schemes given in the states. CJI Surya Kant’s bench, while hearing the case of Tamil Nadu Electricity Distribution Corporation vs Central Government, said that the state is in loss. Despite this, many free facilities are being provided. CJI said that from food to electricity and even bicycles, the state is distributing it for free. The court said that such wasteful expenditure will create obstacles in the way of economic development of the country. The court said that we are not talking only about Tamil Nadu. Considering the fact why the schemes are being announced just before the elections. The court asked all the parties and sociologists to reconsider the ideology and how long will this continue.

The Supreme Court said that states should work to provide employment opportunities. CJI said that if they start giving free food from the morning itself, then free electricity, free cycles etc. will be given. He said that we are reaching a situation where we are sending cash directly to people’s bank accounts. The bench said that most of the states are facing revenue deficit. Yet because of these policies they are forced to give away freebies. The Supreme Court said just imagine. CJI Surya Kant’s bench said that due to free schemes, no money is left for development. Only two things are happening like this. First is to pay salaries to officers and second is to spend on free schemes.

The court said that why can’t 25 percent of the revenue collected by the state in a year be used for development? He said that the state government should give an affidavit telling from where it will get this money? CJI said that some people cannot afford freebies. Some people cannot get education or meet the essential needs of life. The Supreme Court bench said that it is the duty of the state to provide facilities, but the money goes into the pockets of those who are taking advantage of free facilities. The Supreme Court said that we know such states where even big landowners get free electricity. You light the electricity, run the machine. Money has to be paid for the facility, but who will pay the money that the state government is talking about giving? The court said that this is the amount received from tax.
