India’s largest car manufacturing company, Maruti Suzukiis now all set to enter the electric segment with full force. The company recently announced the prices of its first electric SUV, the Maruti e Vitara. Moreover, the Toyota Abella EV will also be built on the same platform for Toyota. In response to growing demand, the company is now rolling out a new production line for electric vehicles at its Gujarat plant.

Why the need for a separate EV line?

The Hansalpur plant in Gujarat is currently manufacturing both ICE (Petrol-Diesel) and EV models on the same line. Petrol cars like the Maruti Franks and EVs like the E-Vitara and Toyota Abella will be produced on the line. Currently, this production line has faced difficulties, as it is challenging to produce cars with different technologies on the same line. To solve this problem, the company is developing a new, special EV line called “Production D”.

Increased production capacity

Currently, the Hansalpur plant has a total capacity of 7.5 lakh units per annum. After the launch of the new EV line, this capacity will increase to 1 million units per year. Additionally, the company is constructing a new plant at Khoraj in Gujarat, with a capacity of 10 lakh units per annum. This means that Maruti’s total production capacity will increase significantly in the future.

Demand is increasing

The demand for Maruti Suzuki cars is seen to be increasing steadily. In the month of January, the total wholesale figure of the company was recorded at 2,36,962 units. Out of which domestic sales were 1,78,300 units. Apart from this, exports have reached 51,020 units, a growth of 88%.

Bookings have also grown by around 25% year-on-year. Currently, the pending bookings with the company has reached 1.75 lakh units. Therefore, the company has a special emphasis on providing quick delivery to the customers by reducing the waiting period.

Why the special focus on EVs?

Although Maruti entered the EV market relatively late, the company is moving forward with a long-term strategy. Models like Maruti e Vitara and Ebella will play an important role in domestic as well as export markets.

The new EV line will allow the company to achieve a better balance between conventional ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) and EV production, which will help meet future demand.
