From Himanta to Bhupen Bora, who joined Assam BJP from Congress?
Before the Assam Assembly elections, the political fight between BJP and Congress is increasing in the state. Verbal arrows are being fired from both sides, but the aim of both is one to make inroads among the public by any means. Amidst these statements, BJP is taking two steps and working on getting the biggest leaders of the state Congress included in its party. Recently, BJP has shocked the oldest party of the country by including former Assam Congress President Bhupen Bora in the saffron party. Apart from this, BJP is working on including more big leaders of Congress in the party in the coming time.
Meanwhile, senior Assam Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, made a big attack on BJP and said that the saffron party has become ‘the party of former Congress leaders’. Also alleged that the number of old Congress leaders including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in BJP is continuously increasing.

‘BJP wears Topi’
Talking to the media, Debabrata Saikia said, ‘I do not want to wear Topi, but I wear Gandhi Topi, which is necessary for our party work. But look at BJP today… from the current Chief Minister to so many old Congress leaders have joined it that BJP can be called ‘the party of old students of Congress’.
Using the words ‘CAP’ and ‘cap’, Debabrata Saikia further said that BJP is ‘wearing a new cap’ to the old Congress leaders after changing parties.
People need leaders with real identity – Saikia
He further said, ‘Today BJP looks more like CAP, i.e. the party of old Congress leaders, than a new alternative. A party which is full of old faces of Congress and now they have worn a different colour. This CAP is not a real change but wants to fool everyone by rebranding and ‘make everyone wear Topi’. People want leaders with real identity, not the politics of recreated leaders.
Actually, this statement of Debabrata Saikia has come about the leaders in Assam who are continuously leaving Congress and joining BJP. Talking about the internal preparations of Congress, he said that Priyanka Gandhi has been made the chairperson of the screening committee of Congress for the upcoming elections. Saikia said that Priyanka Gandhi herself will meet the District Congress President and State Congress Committee members before finalizing the list of candidates in the state. He said that this step is better and will take everyone along.
