Eye Infection Cases: Nine people lose sight after cataract surgery under ‘Ayushman’

Eye Infection Post Surgery: In a shocking incident, nine patients had to have one eye removed due to infection after cataract surgery in a private hospital, while nine others lost their vision after the surgery. The hospital concerned has been sealed and an inquiry has been ordered.

30 patients were operated on in an eye camp organized at New Rajesh Hi-Tech Hospital on February 1. Within 24 hours of surgery, many patients complain of severe pain and discharge from the operated eye.

Discomfort increased within a few hours after surgery. According to patients’ relatives, many patients started complaining of severe pain, swelling and pus in the eyes within four to six hours after the surgery. Some also suffered from vomiting and diarrhoea. Many patients had to be referred to larger medical institutions as their condition worsened. Five patients were referred to Lucknow, five to Delhi and one to Varanasi.

Trouble started after going home after being discharged

District Magistrate Deepak Meena said the health department’s tests confirmed the bacterial infection. Many surgeries were done under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Patients allege that they were discharged within hours of surgery and complications developed the very next day. Some of the worst affected patients are being treated at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi and hospitals in Varanasi and Lucknow. Doctors had to remove the infected eye of 9 people to prevent the infection from spreading further.

According to family members, the second day after the first surgery, he started bleeding profusely from his eyes. As his condition worsened, he was rushed to AIIMS, where it was decided to remove his eye to prevent infection. Now they have been called again on February 23 for further examination.
