Taboo Season 2: Release details, cast news and story details – Everything you need to know

The most awaited return in international television is Taboo—the series’ dark, moody take on 19th century intrigue, revenge, and empire through leading character James Keziah Delaney (Tom Hardy), who has intrigued viewers since the final episode aired in 2017. Season 2 has been long anticipated because the delivery of Season 1 provided a thrilling story and left Delaney escaping execution and sailing to new horizons; and, therefore, provided an abundance of visceral action, political intrigue, mysticism, and raw intensity on the journey to the New World. Co-creator Steven Knight confirmed in early 2026 that he and Hardy had come up with conceptual plans for Season 2, albeit there are still many pages to write and scheduling issues; therefore, adding to the build-up of excitement nearly 10 years after the second installment of  Taboo was released.

As of early 2026, Taboo Season 2 still has no official release date.

The series was renewed in 2017 by BBC One and FXbut production has faced long delays. In 2025–2026 interviewscreator Steven Knight confirmed that Season 2 is actively being written, with the story direction clear. The scheduling—mainly Tom Hardy’s packed film slate—is the biggest obstacle. While publicly stating that scripts are in progress, reinforcing that the project is alive, not cancelled.

Possible filming might be in late 2026 or 2027. Any online claims of a 2026 release date or trailers are fan-made or misleading.

Taboo Season 2 Potential Plot

The second season of the show will pick up right after the first season concluded.

Delaney heads off from London with his “League of the Damned”. There will be an expansion from Britain to the New World.

Potential locations for Season 2 may include the Azores, North America or both.

Colonial power struggles, Trade empire and revenge, affecting once again, Delaney’s fractured mind, Nootka Sound inheritance and geopolitical conflict.

The season will have 8 episodes in line with Season 1’s format.
