Highway Toll Plaza New Rules: There is a very important news for motorists traveling on national highways and expressways. Central Govt and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) At the toll plaza Cash Transactions are in the process of being completely stopped. In future, toll will be accepted only through FASTag or UPI at all toll booths in the country. This major step is being taken to make transactions at toll booths more transparent and save the time of passengers.
Access will be on digital payment only
As per NHAI’s new policy, cash will not be accepted at toll booths from April 1, 2026. At present FASTag usage on highways is more than 98 percent. Due to this success, the emphasis is now on digitizing the entire system. Passengers who do not have balance in FASTag, will be given an option to pay through UPI (Unified Payment Interface). With this decision, long queues at toll plazas and disputes over chiller money will now be over forever.
Get relief from traffic jams
Cash transactions at toll booths lead to long queues of vehicles especially during ‘peak hours’. This wastes both fuel and time. As per NHAI’s estimation, implementing a fully digital system will make traffic management more effective. At over 1,150 toll plazas across the country, passengers can travel hassle-free. This will help increase the average speed on the highway.

Existing Rules and Penal Provisions
As per the current rules, vehicles without a valid FASTag have to pay double the toll if paid in cash. Also, payment through UPI is charged 1.25 times depending on the vehicle category. However, since the option of cash transactions will be removed from April 1, passengers will have no option but to make digital payments.

This decision of the central government is not only to bring transparency but also to promote eco-friendly travel. The environment will also benefit from fuel savings and reduced paperwork. So now before hitting the highway make sure you have enough balance in your FASTag or keep the UPI app ready in your mobile. Otherwise, your journey may be disrupted at the toll booth.
