India’s important diplomatic step: joint statement on Israel

India supported the statement of over 100 countries at the United Nations against Israel’s West Bank move ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel. It affirms balanced diplomacy and international law.

New Delhi: Just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel, India has taken an important diplomatic step, which has become a topic of discussion at the international level. India has supported a joint statement against Israel at the United Nations (UN), terming the unilateral actions by Israel in the West Bank as a violation of international law and demanding its immediate withdrawal. This statement has been issued by more than 100 countries and international organizations, including major countries such as the United Kingdom, Russia, France and Germany.

India endorsed this statement just before the deadline. The move has created a stir in diplomatic circles as it comes amid India’s growing defense and technical cooperation with Israel. The statement said any attempts to change the demographics and geographical location of the Palestinian territories occupied after 1967, including East Jerusalem, must be rejected.

International warning on Israel’s actions in the West Bank

Along with this statement, UN Under-Secretary General Rosemary Decalo has also warned that Israel’s move is moving in the direction of creating a situation of de facto annexation i.e. practical occupation. This issue has already reached the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the international community is keeping a watch on it.

This stance of India is important because relations between New Delhi and Tel Aviv have strengthened significantly in the last decade. India-Israel partnership has been continuously deepening, especially in the field of defense and technical cooperation. Despite this, India has always supported the two-state solution, in which emphasis has been laid on ensuring the existence of both independent Palestine on the one hand and Israel within secure borders on the other.

India’s balanced diplomatic stance

India has been making efforts to improve its relations with both Palestine and Israel. On one hand, India is strengthening strategic partnership with Israel, while on the other hand it has also been supporting Palestine under international law and United Nations resolutions. Through this balanced stance, India tries to strengthen its role in West Asia and maintains friendly relations with both sides.

India has given a clear message that friendship is important, but adherence to global rules and international principles is equally important. This stance is part of India’s traditional diplomatic policy of maintaining a balance between strategic interests and global responsibilities.

Impact on Prime Minister Modi’s visit

This issue can play an important role during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Israel. It remains to be seen what kind of role India plays in West Asia while maintaining its traditional balancing stance. This initiative of India indicates that it is in favor of following the rules in cooperation with the international community, and also gives importance to cooperation with strategic partners.
