Vinod Jakhar appointed new president of NSUI, spent 17 days in jail last year for opposing RSS program

New Delhi. Vinod Jakhar, a youth leader from Rajasthan who is close to Sachin Pilot, has been appointed the national president of the National Student Union of India (NSUI), the student organization of the Congress. Student politics of Rajasthan has proved its mettle at the national level today. The day of 20 February 2026 has been recorded in the pages of history because for the first time a student leader from Rajasthan has been appointed as the National President of the National Students Union of India (NSUI).

This is a matter of pride not only for Vinod Jakhar but for the entire Rajasthan because this is the first time in the 55-year history of NSUI that the command has been handed over to a leader from Rajasthan. Vinod Jakhar was currently serving as the state president of Rajasthan NSUI. Party’s national president Mallikarjun Kharge has appointed NSUI’s Rajasthan unit chief Vinod Jakhar as the national president. Information to this effect was given by General Secretary KC Venugopal.

Who is Vinod Jakhar, the new president of NSUI?

Vinod Jakhar is a leader who has come out of student politics. He contested his first election from Rajasthan College and won. After this, he contested the election of Rajasthan University Students Union President as an independent candidate and won that too. Later he was made the state president of NSUI and he was working on the same post. Now the Congress high command has appointed him the national president of NSUI. It is being told that two days ago, Rahul Gandhi had taken interviews of about 15 student leaders, after which this decision was taken. Let us tell you that till now Varun Chaudhary was in the role of National President of NSUI.

Vinod Jakhar is counted among the young Dalit leaders. Jakhar has been the president of Rajasthan University Students Union. Rahul Gandhi himself had recently taken interviews for the appointment of National President of NSUI. Nirmal Chaudhary from Rajasthan was also among those who gave interviews. Jakhar’s appointment is being considered very important from the internal political equations of Congress. On September 30 last year, Vinod Jakhar was arrested by the police and sent to jail on charges of sabotaging the Shastra Pujan program of RSS at Rajasthan University. Jakhar had to stay in jail for 17 days. On October 17, 2025, Jakhar got bail from the High Court. Jakhar had led the protest against the RSS program at Rajasthan University.
