How will India benefit from the removal of Trump’s tariffs?

Washington: The Supreme Court of America has canceled the heavy import duties i.e. tariffs imposed on many countries by President Donald Trump. In this decision pronounced on Friday, the court said with a majority of 6-3 that the emergency powers using which Trump imposed these tariffs were not correct. It is believed that this decision has dealt a major blow to Trump’s economic plans. After the court’s decision came out, Trump said in a press conference that the Supreme Court did not listen to us. The US President said that the court’s decision is disappointing. Describing the decision of the Supreme Court as disappointing, he said that the court has taken a shameful decision.

Trump increased tariffs on all countries by 10 percent
Trump, who seemed unhappy with the Supreme Court’s decision, announced a 10 percent increase in tariffs on all countries. “I have other options on tariffs,” he said at the press conference. Now I can charge higher tariffs. America’s economic security is essential. The Supreme Court came under pressure from the opposition. I took better decisions than other presidents. I provided billions of dollars in benefits to America. I can impose more tariffs to protect America. Trump said that a global tariff of 10 percent will be imposed.
What did the Supreme Court say on Trump’s tariffs?
The Supreme Court said in its decision that the US Constitution in very clear terms gives Congress full power to impose taxes, which also includes tariffs or duties. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the decision, ‘The framers of the Constitution did not give any power to impose taxes to the President or the Executive.’ Three judges, Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh dissented from the decision. Justice Kavanaugh said that whether these fees are good or bad in terms of policy, they are completely legal based on law, history and past decisions.

Will Trump administration officials take a break?
Chief Justice Roberts further said that no President has ever had the power to impose such a duty under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), so such a power never existed. This decision does not prevent Trump from imposing tariffs entirely, as he can use other laws. But this decision has put more restrictions on some of his powers. Nevertheless, senior Trump administration officials say that they will try to keep the tariff system the same in other ways.

Trump called the court’s decision shameful
When this matter went to the Supreme Court, Trump had said that the decision against him in the case would cause huge loss to the country’s economy. At the time of the Supreme Court’s decision, Trump was holding personal meetings with about 24 governors from both parties, i.e., Democrats and Republicans. When he was informed of this decision taken by majority, he called it ‘shameful’. Surveys show that these tariffs imposed by Trump were not liked much among the common people. In fact, common people believed that due to tariffs, inflation was increasing and it was becoming difficult to meet expenses.
