Big relief for Raj Kundra in Bitcoin scam; Bail granted in multi-crore misappropriation case
Bollywood actress Shilpa ShettyHusband and industrialist of Raj KundraHas received a major reprieve in the Bitcoin scam case. A special PMLA court in Mumbai granted him bail on Friday, February 20. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had filed a chargesheet in the scam and the court had summoned Raj Kundra and Dubai-based businessman Rajesh Satija. Both were ordered to appear in court on January 19. Raj Kundra failed to appear on schedule and appeared in court today along with his lawyer Prashant Patil.
In January, Special Court (PMLA) Judge R.B. Rote took cognizance of the charge sheet filed by the Enforcement Directorate in this case. Raj Kundra was then summoned. Raj Kundra appeared before the court and applied for bail, which was accepted.
Raj Kundra’s lawyer Prashant Patil said that his Ashila has been fully cooperating with the ED investigation since 2021. The lawyer said that all the documents related to the case are already in the possession of the investigating agency. So there was no need to detain Raj Kundra.
The Central Bureau of Investigation has alleged that Raj Kundra received 285 bitcoins from Amit Bhardwaj, the alleged mastermind of the Gain Bitcoin Ponzi scheme, to set up a bitcoin mining firm in Ukraine. ED has claimed that the agreement was not fulfilled. As a result, Raj Kundra still has 285 bitcoins, which are currently worth over 150 crores.

According to the charge sheet, Raj Kundra had claimed that he only acted as an intermediary. But there was an agreement between him and Amit Bhardwaj’s father called a term sheet, which belied his claim of being a mere intermediary.
The ED said that seven years after the transaction, Raj Kundra recalled the exact number of bitcoins he had received in five specific installments. This suggests that he was actually the recipient of the bitcoins as the beneficial owner, not merely acting as an intermediary.
