A day before the match against South Africa, Indian captain Surya Kumar Yadav answered the questions being raised regarding Indian batting in a press conference. “We are ready to adapt to any wicket. We have played on difficult pitches so far, we know what kind of batting we need on them,” Surya said. He said, “We are trying to start with a bang but we don’t want to be a team which keeps hitting continuously. We also have to play smart cricket, we have enough firepower to score 60-70 runs. The day we get a good start, we will be aggressive.”

In the press conference, questions were raised about the form of Abhishek Sharma, who has been out for zero in the last three matches. To this the Indian captain said, “I am not worried going into the game. I am worried about the people who are worried about Abhishek Sharma. I am more worried about the teams who will face him later. He did everything last year, now it is time that we also repay him.”

Regarding Indian batting against spin, he said, “It doesn’t matter who bowls, right arm off spinner or anyone else. We have played so much that we know how to face anyone. Batsmen have their own gameplan in their respective capacities and they know what to do. There have been ups and downs against off spinners.” Regarding Sanju, he said, “Everything is going well. Expectations from the team are very high but the wickets are a little different. We do not need to score 250 runs every time. We will face the surface challenge in the future.”

Regarding Tilak Verma, Surya Kumar said, “The team management has asked Tilak to play like this. If 2 wickets fall, he will have to play a few overs and step back. I am sure he will not be happy with the way he is batting, he is working hard in practice but I am not worried about him.” He further said, “Except the openers, 3-8 will have to be flexible. If no wicket falls till 8-9 overs then you can see Dubey or Pandya playing. My position is also flexible.”

Game plan against South Africa

Ahead of the Super-8 match against South Africa, the Indian captain said, “The spinners have done well against all the opposition teams. I can’t say that we will get an edge over South Africa, but we have some plans and if they are implemented it would be great.” “It’s very difficult to say there is no pressure. There is definitely pressure when you are playing on your home soil. Also, everyone deals with it differently. We are trying our best to keep it simple. We try to stay present and grounded. We got a good wake up call against USA which helped us stay in the moment and not think too much,” he said.

On the role of the toss, Surya Kumar further said, “The toss is now considered overrated. If you bat well in the first innings, even when there is dew, you will be able to defend well with this bowling unit.”
