Javed Akhtar condemned Taliban’s new law

Javed Akhtar’s reaction on Taliban’s law

Mumbai: Javed Akhtar has strongly criticized the new law implemented by the Taliban, which legalizes domestic violence under certain conditions. The Taliban in Afghanistan have introduced a new criminal code, which has been signed by their supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada. The rules related to domestic violence in this 90-page code have generated outrage globally.

According to sources, under the new law a husband is allowed to hit his wife or inflict physical punishment provided it does not break bones or cause serious injuries. Even if the husband hits with such force that it leaves bruises or blue marks, the punishment is limited to only 15 days’ imprisonment, and for this the woman will have to present evidence in the court. There is a provision of minor punishment only for serious injuries, while there is no strict ban on other types of violence.

Moreover, if a wife goes to the house of her parents or relatives and stays there without her husband’s permission, she can be jailed for three months. This rule puts women in more bondage. Famous lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar gave his strong reaction on this on 21 February.

‘It is being done in the name of religion’

He wrote, “Taliban has legalized wife beating but without breaking a bone. If the wife goes to her maternal home without her husband’s permission, then three months in jail. I appeal to the Muftis and Maulvis of India to condemn this unconditionally because all this is being done in the name of their religion.” This statement of Javed Akhtar is becoming increasingly viral. Many people agree with him and are saying that such cruelty should not be tolerated in the name of religion. Population Foundation of India has also called it dangerous, which legalizes violence against women.

This incident is again raising questions on the status of women in Afghanistan. There are already many restrictions on women’s education, work and freedom under Taliban rule. Human rights organizations at the international level are condemning it and saying that it gives women a status lower than animals. The voice of celebs like Javed Akhtar will hopefully bring more attention to this issue and create pressure to protect women’s rights around the world. This news has become a matter of concern not only for Afghanistan but for the entire world.
