PM Modi laid the foundation stone of PM Semiconductor Plant: Said – ‘Made in India’ chip is very important for developed India
Greater Noida. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that the foundation of a developed India will be laid on the basis of self-reliance, for which it is very important to have semiconductor chips made in India. While laying the foundation stone of the semiconductor plant of ‘India Chip Pvt Ltd’, a joint venture of HCL Group and Foxconn, through online medium, Prime Minister Modi said that during the Covid-19 pandemic, the weak supply chain of small chips had halted the growth of many economies and work in various factories had come to a standstill.
Addressing the event, the Prime Minister said, “Developed India will be created only when India becomes self-reliant. For this, chips made in India are very important. Whatever India is doing in the field of technology in this decade will become the foundation of our capability in the 21st century.” He said that with the manufacturing of chips in India, the country will no longer have to depend on others for the production of our modern equipment.
Prime Minister Modi said, “During the COVID-19 pandemic, chip supply was disrupted, factories came to a halt and global economies faltered. India took a lesson from that crisis and turned it into an opportunity. We resolved to make India self-reliant in the field of chip manufacturing and for this we are creating a complete ‘semiconductor ecosystem’ in the country.”
‘India Chip Pvt Ltd’, a joint venture between HCL Group and Foxconn, will set up an ‘Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test’ (OSAT) plant under Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) at Jewar, Greater Noida. This plant of HCL and Foxconn will further strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s identity as a ‘powerhouse’ for technology.
Highlighting his role as an MP from Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Modi said, “Being an MP from Uttar Pradesh, it is a moment of immense pride for me. This semiconductor plant will create massive employment opportunities for the youth of Uttar Pradesh and across India.” The Prime Minister acknowledged that even though India started its journey in the semiconductor sector a little late, it is now moving forward at a very rapid pace.
Referring to the historical transformation between oil and technology, he said, “In the 20th century, the countries that had oil had prosperity and power. But in the 21st century, this power is contained in a small ‘chip’. Now the center of power is the skills and materials that are attached to this chip.” India Chip Private Limited is a 60:40 joint venture between HCL Group and Foxconn. This advanced OSAT plant is expected to begin operation by 2028. The company plans to invest Rs 3,700 crore on this project in the next few years.
This investment is likely to create more than 3,500 direct and indirect jobs. This will also help in developing local supply chains and attracting eco-partners in the semiconductor value chain. This plant will have the capacity to process 20,000 wafers i.e. silicon plates per month. The facility is intended to meet India’s growing domestic demand and strengthen a self-reliant, robust semiconductor supply chain.
On this occasion, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said, “In the last 11 years, Prime Minister Modi has established India as a ‘powerhouse’ of electronics manufacturing. India has now become one of the top three countries in the world exporting electronics. This plant will produce 3.6 crore chips every month. The ‘brain’ (chip) of the digital screens you see will now be manufactured in jewellery.”
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that jewelery is emerging as an ‘jewelry’ not only for Uttar Pradesh but for the entire country. He stressed that the development of Uttar Pradesh will depend on the Prime Minister’s vision for chip manufacturing.
Bob Chen, President, Semiconductor Business Group, Foxconn Company, said, “Today we are celebrating the bhoomi pujan of ‘India Chip’. Our aim is to set up a reliable semiconductor assembly and testing facility in India. We look forward to growing together and contributing to India’s growth in the global technology landscape.” On this occasion, HCL Group Chairperson Roshni Nadar said that this joint venture unit will cater to the needs of both domestic and international markets.
