Six people remain missing after a passenger boat carrying 23 individuals capsized on Thac Ba Lake in northern Lao Cai Province on Saturday evening following a collision with a ferry transporting stones.

Seventeen others were rescued. Local officials said the accident happened around 7:15 p.m. on Feb. 21, the fifth day of the Lunar New Year holiday.

The stone-laden ferry, operated by 42-year-old Nguyen Van Tham, was en route to Huong Ly Port when it collided with the passenger vessel. At the time, the boat had 22 passengers and a captain on board.

After the impact, the passenger boat sank. Authorities confirmed that 17 people were safely brought ashore and are in stable condition, while search efforts continue for the remaining six.

Rescue teams, local officials and fishermen have deployed boats and equipment to scour the area.

Thac Ba Lake, situated on the Chay River between the former Yen Binh and Luc Yen districts, now within Lao Cai Province, is among Vietnam’s three largest man-made lakes and is dotted with more than 1,000 islands of various sizes.
