Former Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah finally joins BJP

Finally, before the important elections of Assam, former state Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah distanced himself from the Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. He formally joined the party in the presence of Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia in a program organized at the Assam BJP headquarters in Guwahati. Along with him, Youth Congress leaders Sanju Barua and Sarvanarayan Deuri also joined BJP.

This development has come before the upcoming assembly elections, which is being considered as a big shock in the politics of the state. While resigning from Congress this week, Bhupen Bora reportedly cited party MP Rakibul Hussain as a major reason for his decision. He alleged that the reins of Congress in Assam are in the hands of Hussain and state president Gaurav Gogoi is playing only a nominal role. However, Rakibul Hussain has not responded directly to these allegations and has said that he will talk on this topic in a few days.

Bhupen Kumar Bora has been associated with Congress for the last 32 years. He served two terms in the Assam Assembly from 2006 to 2016, representing the Bihpuria seat. He was the President of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) from 2021 to 2024.

During the tenure of Tarun Gogoi, he was also the spokesperson and parliamentary secretary in the state government. Bora, who started his career in student politics, was the Vice President of North Lakhimpur College Students Union and General Secretary of Dibrugarh University Post Graduate Students Union.

Born on 30 October 1970 in Pohumora in Lakhimpur district, Bora received his education from North Lakhimpur College and Dibrugarh University. While studying at Dibrugarh University, he was active in student politics and joined the All Assam Students Union (AASU). At that time, current Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was also a student in the university and both were associated with the same student organization.

Bora held various responsibilities in the Congress organization from NSUI to Youth Congress and State Congress. He was also the Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and played a role in strengthening the organization in other states of the North-East. Under his leadership, Congress won three seats in the Lok Sabha elections in Assam.

Bhupen Bora’s joining BJP can give rise to new equations in the state politics, especially when the assembly elections are near. Political observers are seeing this as a big blow for the Congress in Assam and organizational strength for the BJP.
