History tells us that the Somnath temple was repeatedly attacked for almost six centuries. The first major attack was carried out by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1026 AD. At that time the temple was looted, the Jyotirlinga was damaged and huge property was taken away. After this, in 1299 AD, Alauddin Khilji’s general Ulugh Khan attacked the temple and is said to have taken the idol to Delhi.
Furthermore, Zafar Khan in 1395 AD and Mahmud Begada in 1451 AD damaged the temple. The temple was also demolished under the orders of Aurangzeb in 1665 AD. After every attack, Somnath temple was rebuilt and renovated and today it remains the center of crores of devotees.
