BJP MLA arrested for taking bribe in Karnataka, caught taking Rs 5 lakh in Lokayukta’s trap action, accused of demanding Rs 11 lakh

In a major corruption case in Karnataka, Karnataka Lokayukta Police has arrested BJP MLA Dr. Chandru Lamani red handed for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 5 lakh. This action was taken in Gadag district on Saturday (21 February). According to the information, along with the MLA, his personal assistant Manjunath Valmiki and private assistant Guru Naik have also been detained.

What is the matter?

The matter pertains to a construction work related to the Minor Irrigation Department. First class contractor Vijay Pujar, resident of Chinchali in Gadag district, had filed a complaint in the Lokayukta. He alleged that the MLA had demanded a bribe of Rs 11 lakh in exchange for help in approving and completing the work of building retaining walls on both sides of the road.

Action taken on contractor’s complaint

After receiving the complaint, Lokayukta police laid a trap. An amount of Rs 5 lakh was given under the fixed scheme. As soon as the money was accepted, the team took immediate action and caught the MLA and his two assistants. Officials said that a case has been registered against the accused under Section 7(a) and 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

Interrogation of the accused continues

According to the statement of Lokayukta, this bribe demand was related to the work of Minor Irrigation Department. At present, all three accused are being interrogated in custody and further investigation of the case is going on. This incident has created a stir in the politics of the state. The opposition has raised questions on the government, while the investigating agencies are busy collecting evidence.
