Those small parties of Assam on whose basis Congress and BJP will climb the ladder of power?

The Election Commission may announce the election dates for Assam Assembly Elections, 2026 later this month. Before this, both the ruling party and the opposition are working hard to get the throne of Assam. Where the Bharatiya Janata Party, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Baswa Sarma, is expanding its clan by including opposition leaders in its party. Whereas, under the leadership of MP Gaurav Gogoi, Congress is expanding the scope of its alliance by including smaller parties.

 

The Congress-led opposition alliance for the Assam elections has been named ‘Asom Sonmilito Morcha’. However, this alliance is not yet fully finalized as talks are going on with some allies regarding seat-sharing. Also, there is disagreement going on among some parties.

Which parties are in Congress alliance?

There is talk of an alliance between Congress and Akhil Gogoi’s Raijor Dal, but it has not been finalized yet. In fact, there is a lot of tension and controversy regarding seat-sharing. Gogoi has demanded 15 seats from Congress, but Congress is ready to give him 4 seats. This is the root of dispute between the two parties. However, it is believed that both the parties together will find some middle path.

In Assam, the Congress high command has sent Bhanwar Jitendra Singh as in-charge. He, along with state president Gaurav Gogoi, is increasing the size of the alliance in the state. Both of them together are including every small party which has its base in their areas. This is the reason why Congress has left 26 assembly constituencies for its alliance partners, while it itself will contest 100 seats.

 

Mainly the following parties are involved or are in the process of joining the alliance with Congress…

 

Raijor Dal: Raijor Dal is a major regional party of Assam under the leadership of MLA Akhil Gogoi. Raijor Dal is demanding 15 assembly seats from Congress, but Congress is ready to give only 4 seats to Raijor Dal. Akhil Gogoi said on Congress’s point that if 15 seats are not given as per the requirement of the ruling party, then I have been given the right to rethink the alliance. Now the ball is in Congress’s court and it has to consider. This is the reason why the alliance between the two parties has not been sealed yet.

Assam Jatiya Parishad: Assam Jatiya Parishad is a regional political party of Assam. The party was formed in September 2020 by the merger of two Assam student organisations, All Assam Students Union (AASU) and Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP). This party is considered to have penetration among the youth in Assam.

 

Apart from this, Communist Party of India (Marxist), CPI, CPI (ML) Liberation, All Party Hill Leaders Conference and other small parties having influence in the hilly areas of Assam can be included in Assam Samhito Morcha. The thing to note in this is that Congress has not yet officially announced the alliance. An alliance may take shape in the coming times.

Which parties are in BJP alliance?

Assam BJP is currently expanding the party and NDA. Chief Minister Himanta Sarma has given a big blow to former Assam Congress President Bhupen Bora by joining BJP. Apart from this, he has included many former MLAs of the opposition in the party. In such a situation, let us see which main parties are included in the BJP-led NDA alliance for the Assam Assembly elections 2026?

 

Assam Gana Parishad: Assam Gana Parishad is an old political party of the state and a long time ally of BJP. It raises the interests of the indigenous population of Assam, Assamese identity, culture and the issue of illegal migration. AGP has contested elections with BJP in 2016 and 2021 and has been a part of the government.

 

United People’s Party Liberal: United People’s Party is a liberal party associated with the Bodoland region. It has become a major regional party of Assam. Since its establishment in 2015, this party is mainly active in the Bodoland Territorial Region area. The party continuously emphasizes on development, lasting peace and welfare of people of all castes and religions in Assam. The United People’s Party Liberal has formed the government under the leadership of Pramod Boro, performing well in the 2020 Kebudoland Territorial Region elections.

 

Bodoland People’s Front: Bodoland People’s Front recently joined the NDA. Which is the regional party of Assam. This party mainly works for the interests of the Bodo community, their cultural identity, rights and the development of the Bodoland region. Apart from this, BJP led NDA includes Rabha Hasong Joutha Sangharsh Samiti and Janshakti Party.

 

Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia has recently said that NDA will contest on all 126 seats, but talks are on on seat sharing. However, there have been reports of some tension over seat sharing with UPPL and AGP. But, it is believed that BJP’s alliance is strong.
