How did ‘Artificial Intelligence’ get its name? Know about the scientists who laid its foundation
Artificial Intelligence: AI tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini are used for college projects and office reports. The term ‘Artificial Intelligence’ (AI) was first used about 70 years ago.
Artificial Intelligence: With the changing times, the era of technology is being seen all over the world. In today’s modern era, AI, which we call Artificial Intelligence, has become an important part of human life. Today, AI is doing all the daily tasks ranging from education to office work. It is not a challenge for AI to complete even the biggest and most difficult tasks in just a few seconds. Today AI has the answer to every question which a common man might not have.
To further strengthen AI, India recently organized AI Summit from 16 February to 20 February 2026, where tech companies from more than 100 countries of the world participated on this global platform and presented their new AI products. In such a situation, now the question is, when was the word ‘Artificial Intelligence’ used for the first time and who gave this name.
When and who suggested the name of AI?
AI tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini are used for college projects and office reports. The term ‘Artificial Intelligence’ (AI) was first used about 70 years ago. American computer scientist John McCarthy suggested this term in 1956. McCarthy wanted to create a machine that could think like humans. In 1956, he called a meeting of scientists at Dartmouth College in America. The name ‘Artificial Intelligence’ was formally used for the first time in the documents of this meeting.
Why was the name ‘Artificial Intelligence’ chosen?
Artificial Intelligence was not named just like that, but there was a deep discussion among the researchers behind it. John McCarthy and his colleagues discussed this in a special meeting. Scientists believed that if machines can learn something, reason and solve problems, then this is their intelligence. Based on this thinking, this name was given by combining the words ‘Artificial’ and ‘Intelligence’.
At that time computers were in their initial stages, yet those scientists had anticipated the future. He had imagined that a time would come when machines would work, play, speak and understand our language like humans. The same visionary thinking of scientists is proving true today.
Who laid the foundation of AI research?
- Many eminent scientists like Marvin Minsky and Claude Shannon were present at the Dartmouth conference.
- All these giants together started Artificial Intelligence (AI).
- At that time even he had no idea that this small word would one day change the technology of the entire world.
- It was from here that the real foundation of AI research was laid.
What is the impact of the word AI today?
After 1956, Artificial Intelligence started making its mark among scientists. Although the pace of research was slow in the beginning, but with the increase in the power of computers in the 1980s, the work on it became very fast. Today that same small idea has taken the form of a big change, which we are seeing used in modern technologies like robotics, machine learning and deep learning.

What is the role of AI in today’s era?
It is absolutely right to call today’s era the era of AI because it has become an important part of our lives. From accurate treatment in hospitals and preventing fraud in banks, to chatbots and self-driving cars, everything is amazing through this technology. Be it mobile or court, today Artificial Intelligence is working actively in every field. Therefore, it is also working in understanding every aspect of life.
