Neither F-35, nor Su-57: These are the 5 fastest fighter jets in the world

New Delhi. When it comes to the world’s most modern stealth aircraft, the names of F-35 Lightning II and Sukhoi Su-57 often come to the fore. But if the only parameter is speed, then the picture becomes different. Many old but very powerful fighter planes even today leave behind the new generation jets in terms of speed. Let us know about the five fastest fighter jets in the world.

1. MiG-25

The Russian-developed MiG-25 ‘Foxbat’ is counted among the fastest operational fighter jets ever. Its maximum speed can reach Mach 3.2 i.e. about 3,540 km per hour. It was designed primarily for the interceptor role, to intercept high-flying enemy aircraft. The powerful turbojet engine fitted in it gives it extraordinary speed. Despite its age, this aircraft has served in many countries for a long time.

2. MiG-31

The MiG-31 is considered to be an improved version of the MiG-25. Its maximum speed is approximately Mach 2.8 to 2.9 (about 3,000 km/h). It was designed to track and intercept enemy aircraft and missiles at long ranges. With better radar and weapon systems, this aircraft is still an important part of the Russian Air Force. Although its speed is excellent, due to its large size it does not fall in the stealth category.

3.F-15 Eagle

America’s F-15 has long been known as an air superiority fighter. Its variants, such as the F-15C/D and F-15EX, can achieve speeds of up to Mach 2.5. This aircraft has the capability to carry heavy payload and carry out precision strikes from long ranges. Even though it is not a stealth jet, its speed and reliability make it relevant even today.

4. Sukhoi Su-27

Russia’s Su-27 ‘Flanker’ is known for its powerful engines and excellent aerodynamic design. Its maximum speed is Mach 2.35 (about 2,900 km/h). It performs well at altitude and is famous for its agility in aerial combat. Many countries have included various versions of it in their air forces.

5. MiG-23

The MiG-23 ‘Flogger’ is distinguished by its variable-sweep wing technology. Its top speed is also around Mach 2.35. This design allows the aircraft to change the angle of the wings according to different speeds and missions. It was an important part of the air forces of many countries during the Cold War.
