Impact Of Trump’s Global Tariffs On India: Donald Trump increased global tariff to 15 percent, loss or benefit to India?

New Delhi. US President Donald Trump had announced a 10 percent global tariff after losing the battle over tariffs in the US Supreme Court. Trump increased this global tariff to 15 percent on Saturday. This global tariff of Trump will be imposed on all countries for 150 days. After which the Trump administration will take a decision regarding the tariff. Despite Trump increasing global tariffs, India will benefit greatly. Trump’s global tariff will not be imposed on all goods exported from India to America. Whereas, there will be a maximum tariff of 20 percent on some Indian products.

Trump exempted agricultural products like fertilizers, tomatoes, oranges, medicines, pharmaceutical products, some auto parts, aerospace items, passenger vehicles, buses, important minerals etc. from the global tariff. In such a situation, Indian businessmen exporting these to America will not have to pay any tariff. At the same time, America is already charging 50 percent tariff on copper, aluminum and steel products. In which there will be no increase. While giving India the Most Favored Nation status, America had imposed only 5 percent tariff on some of its products. Due to global tariff it will now increase to 20 percent. Still, this is less than the 25 percent tariff previously imposed by Trump.

Marine products, some agricultural products, medicines, precious and semi-precious stones, petroleum products, telecom sector equipment, readymade garments, gold jewellery, iron and steel products, vehicles and auto parts etc. are exported from India to America. Apart from this, India’s service industry also works in America. At the same time, India takes crude oil from America. Apart from this, it imports coal, cut and polished diamonds, machines related to power industry and aircraft and their parts. The first phase of the trade agreement between India and America is going to be implemented in March 2026. For this, the Indian delegation is going to America on Monday. Trump has already said that his global tariff will have no impact on the trade deal with India.
