Varun was getting beaten badly, then he took Miller’s wicket and broke Arshdeep’s record.
The Indian team is facing South Africa in its first Super-8 match in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Batting first after winning the toss, South Africa scored 187 runs at the loss of 7 wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. He lost his top-3 batsmen for just 20 runs. After this, David Miller (63 runs in 35 balls) and Dewald Brewis (45 runs in 29 balls) made a partnership of 97 runs for the fourth wicket and recovered from the initial shocks. With both of them at the crease, the South African team seemed to be crossing 200 but in the 13th over, Shivam Dubey derailed the innings by walking Brevis.
After this Varun Chakraborty took the valuable wicket of Miller. Miller, who seemed to be in a dangerous mood, had earlier taken serious notice of Varun. He had scored 24 runs on 12 balls of this mystery spinner. Varun took a sigh of relief by dismissing him and also continued his wicket-taking streak in the last 17 T20I innings. He has now become the first Indian bowler to take at least 1 wicket in 18 consecutive T20I innings. He overtook Arshdeep Singh, who had achieved the feat in 17 consecutive T20I innings between 2024 and 2025.
