Will Jacques created history, became the first English spin bowler to do so

Sri Lanka is clashing with England in the T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday (22 February). English team’s makeshift spin bowler Will Jacques has created history with his bowling in this Super-8 round match. Will Jacques has become the first spin bowler for England to take three wickets in the powerplay. In the second over of his spell, Jacques took 2 wickets in two consecutive balls. He sent Kushal Mendis and Pawan Ratnayake to the pavilion.

In the next over, Jacques achieved this special feat by dismissing Dunith Vellallage. The Sri Lankan batsman, who created a stir with the bat in the tournament, appeared helpless in front of Jacques.

The English bowler took 3 wickets while conceding only 22 runs in his 4 over spell. Along with taking wickets, Jacques was also very economical in the powerplay. He also made important contributions with the bat. Will Jacques scored 21 runs in 14 balls playing at a strike rate of 150.

Batting first, England scored 146 runs losing 9 wickets in 20 overs at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. On behalf of the team, Phil Salt batted brilliantly and played a brilliant inning of 62 runs in 40 balls. During this inning, Salt hit 6 fours and 2 sixes. However, he could not get support from the rest of the batsmen from the other end. The performance of powerful batsmen like Jos Buttler, Harry Brook and Jacob Bethele was quite disappointing. Butler could score only 7 runs after playing 14 balls, while Brook was out after scoring 14 runs.

The performance of the Sri Lankan bowlers on the Pallekele ground was excellent. Dunith Vellallage proved to be a incomprehensible puzzle for the English batsmen and he took 3 big wickets while conceding just 26 runs in 4 overs. Vellaledge sent Butler-Salt and Brook to the pavilion. At the same time, Mahesha Teekshana took 2 wickets for 21 runs, while Dilshan Madushanka took 2 wickets for 25 runs.
