“Women have the responsibility of leadership in AI development, Guterres’s big statement”

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres met young women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 and emphasized that women should lead the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Guterres said women should not just be included, but play a leading role in the development of AI that “serves all and promotes gender equality.”

Guterres shared his thoughts in a post on

Let us tell you, according to the UN 2.0 Policy Brief, Guterres is talking about using new technologies like AI to enable the innovation process and eliminate gender inequality, discrimination and bias in AI data models. He also stressed the need to invest in better predictive and prescriptive analytics along with machine learning and AI.

At the same time, during the summit, Guterres called for using Artificial Intelligence for the betterment of humanity. He appealed to countries to work together, protect people and invest in technological progress. According to him, nowadays the challenge of international cooperation has increased and there is a lack of trust between countries.

Let us tell you, at the India AI Impact Summit, Guterres said, “We are moving towards the unknown. AI innovation is happening rapidly, while our collective capacity is far ahead of fully understanding it. If we want AI to serve humanity, policy cannot be based only on guesswork or hype. We need accurate facts that we can trust and share across countries and regions.”

Referring to the recently formed AI panel, Guterres said that the United Nations is creating a practical architecture for international cooperation on AI. He informed that this panel will help in reducing the knowledge gap of AI and explore its real impacts. The objective of this panel is to ensure parity between countries at every level of AI. The panel is independent, diverse and multidisciplinary, as AI impacts every sector of society.

At the same time, Guterres said that the first report of this panel will be prepared before the global dialogue on AI governance in July, which will facilitate the countries in policy making and they will be able to find a common basis for technical coordination.

The India AI Impact Summit 2026, held from 16-20 February, was the first global AI summit to be held in the Global South. The summit brought together policymakers, industry leaders, academics and civil society representatives to discuss responsible AI governance and inclusive technological development.

Guterres highlighted the way AI can be used in this summit and called for global cooperation to implement it in the right direction.
